2005-2008

2005-2008
Expansion of the HRE programme in 17 states across the country.

2002-2005

Initiation of the HRE programme in schools run by the Roman Catholic diocese in Trichy, Madurai, Palayamkottai and Kottar.   Around 134 schools, 15,000 students and 250 teachers have been participating in this programme.

2003

Phase IV of the HRE programme launched in 250 Adi Dravida Welfare and Government Tribal Residential Schools (ADW-GTR) in Tamil Nadu.

1999

Beginning of the third phase.  Developed a three-year HRE programme with a set syllabus—Introduction to Human Rights (Class7), Rights of the child (Class 8) and Discrimination (Class 9). Launched several campaigns involving HRE students on issues such as death penalty, free compulsory and quality education.

1998-2000

Second phase of the programme, which reached out to 21,320 students in Class 8 & 9, 315 teachers of 122 schools in ten districts of Tamil Nadu.

1998

First phase of the HRE programme conducted by IHRE in nine schools in Chennai for 1756 students of Class 9 from nine schools.  Ninety teachers trained by IHRE to handle the first module ‘Introduction to Human Rights.’

A pilot programme in Human Rights Education conducted by People’s Watch in nine schools in Tamil Nadu.  

1994-2004

UN decade of Human Rights Education, a major ‘legitimizing’ factor that gave impetus to the HRE programme to expand across the country.
